Al Nawfara Cafe, Damascus, Syria.

Probably one of my favourite places on earth to have coffee and  smoke Nargileh and gossip. I hope to be able to go back…soon.

The ancient Chellah ruins, Rabat, Morocco

I took this photo one misty early morning in Rabat…the sound of all the storks nesting above me was quite remarkable. Beauty.

This is one photo of an excursion to a traditional oil press. If I remember correctly, this was located in the Shephela, the coastal plains of Israel/Palestine.

As I’m sure everyone knows, olives are a miracle fruit, and a huge source of income for the Middle East and Mediterranean countries since the Bronze Age (no, I’m not exaggerating.) This particular machine was made to press those little green guys into delicious, useful, pulpy oil…even if it looks more like a torture device!

This is another photo from my gap year. My school in Jerusalem made sure we all got out and saw the entirety of the land, and we hiked over some pretty awesome terrain. This picture was taken in the south of the country, from the desert area right outside Eilat. We could see neighboring Jordan from pretty much every vantage point on that hike. A couple of times we were able to glimpse a large Jordanian flag flapping in the wind. It looked small, but it must have been massive for us to see it so clearly. At one point, I fancied I could hear it, too. I’ll have to find a picture. (Pity we weren’t able to visit!)

Of all the places we visited, I am fairly sure that this intense, all day hike showed me some of the most visually stunning, impressive vistas I have ever seen in my entire life.

One of my majors in college was archeology, and I was lucky enough to be able to volunteer at some excavations! Due to the nature of the climate in the Middle East, most digs I’ve heard of are conducted in the summer only, during the dry season. Of course, that’s also the super-hot season, so we had to get up before the sun and do our work before the heat of the day became unbearable.

This picture is of the sunrise at Ramat Rahel, a kibbutz/resort/dig site at the very edge of modern municipal Jerusalem, exactly halfway between the Old City and Bethlehem. (Just ride the number 7 bus line to the very end.) The hill which we excavated is the highest in the area, and commands an excellent view - no doubt the reason why the Assyrians built a fortress on top of it. In fact, the area has been continuously inhabited since the Iron Age, if not before, which meant the site was very rich in information. I personally unearthed part of an Aeolic capital and a Persian seal. Multiple coin hoards were found as well. It’s just incredible. I was so lucky to have been able to participate in this project for two summers.

(For those curious, the dig was run under the joint auspices of Tel Aviv U. and Heidelberg U., a German school. There were lots of people from all over the world who worked on that excavation.)

Thank you for the caption! That really is amazing, being a part of history!

Six years back, during my gap year, I studied in Jerusalem. Our school took us on field trips and hikes no less than once a month, and we got to see the length and breadth of this beautiful, war-torn country. I can no longer remember exactly where I took this photo, but I suspect it was in the desert lowlands somewhere not far from Eilat. Though my memory is a tad faulty (oh, old age! :P ) the photo remains one of my favourites, and reminds me that beauty can flourish even in adversity.
