By ZEINA KARAM The Associated Press Sunday, January 30, 2011; 12:22 AM
DAMASCUS, Syria — The young roulette dealer, dressed in electric green, gives the wheel a spin as a crowd of men clutch their whiskey glasses, hoping to strike it rich.

timeforacatnap asked: Regarding website translations, some of them are pretty good. Unforutanately, though, there are always going to be things like idioms that cannot be interpreted and translated by a computer. Even if you don't input an idiom or something, the output in the second language is translated word for word, making the language used seem very rigid, and often doesn't make sense at all. Websites...
satans-advocate asked: It's slightly amusing to me to see so many people around me get so inflamed when they hear anyone on tv mention 'anti-West.'
From the things I have studied and learned, I no longer feel content with living within the 'West' either. The only reason why we are here in the first place is because we conquered and stole land from the Natives who treated this land...

Anonymous asked: Regarding the study abroad debate: I've never been to Egypt and I when I visited Morocco it was only for a weekend, but if you are studying abroad to learn Arabic, it is important to consider the dialects spoken in each country. From what I understand, the spoken Moroccan dialect is quite different from many other dialects of arabic, while the egyptian dialect is one of the most widely spoken...

ellisondubois asked: I have stayed in Cairo, Tangier, and Marrakech. As much as I enjoyed Egypt I have not found a country in Africa that I enjoyed more than Morocco. I'm planning another visit very soon and I am very tempted to make the next visit a ver very lengthy one. If I had to pick between Morocco and Egypt, I'd pick Morocco.
cuckooforcristiano asked: hi! to the poster who just asked about studying abroad in egypt or morocco, i wanted to say something. like you said, the situation in egypt is kind of fragile right now but I actually was there on study abroad (and came back to the states a day before the demonstrations broke out) and it is an AMAZING place, especially Cairo. I'm in love with it, the people, the culture, everything. So, see...
snobberyy asked: I was wondering if any of you could recommend some Arabic music. There's a specific kind I'm trying to find but I don't know the name of the genre(if it has one.) The music is often used in movies/TV shows where there's a scene in the Middle East and it's slow-mid tempo and just instrumentals. It's really pretty. I hope you know what I'm talking about.

aragornsbeard asked: My cousin is an American student studying in Cairo. He was beaten by the riot police for taking pictures. A local man saw him being attacked and shouted "Foreigner, foreigner!" in Arabic and a bunch of people nearby ran over and pulled the police off of my cousin. They took him in and cleaned him up. He can't leave the country to come home because Egypt is trying to contain the...
